I read a book called the energy bus a while back and really like the simple message the author had in an entertaining story format. The story in a nut shell is about a guy with nothing going right in life learns how to be responsible for his own energy. The story gets going as the guy hops on a bus, after his car breaks down, and gets on a bus with a “special” bus driver. The bus driver over the days he is taking the bus, teaches him some steps to improving his energy and thus his life. Though it is more focused on the guy’s business life, it has a lot of lessons that are great reminders for everyday life.
The book has 12 “steps” to creating better “energy” for yourself and the one that I resonate now as I reflect back on the book it is “getting rid of energy vampires”. Basically, saying we do not have to keep relationships that are taking our energy away or draining us over and over. I would offer that can be very important in your overall daily attitude and health. It seems there are willing “energy vampires” that will dump their problems on you until your glossed over and drained. I think some of us do not realize how draining these conversations can be. I feel sometimes we can get caught up in others story and or feel obligated to listen. For those relationships that truly are draining the book says, get rid of them.
I agree for the most part, as it seems life’s too short to let yourself get “energetically sucked” all the time. So, saying no to being “dumped on” is important to me. I wrote an earlier blog about having a 5 minute dumping rule (click here) you might be interested in reading. In that, I mention that it usually feels better to handle more difficult conversations on your terms, when your energy is higher and your better prepared. Also, guiding or requesting conversations to focus on solutions always feels better to me. With taking about solutions I feel I can keep my energy higher and of course, that conversion usually has more positive energy around it.
Clearly their are certain relationships that maybe more complex that you chose keep or maintain for various reasons and times when you just have to “be there” for someone in time of need. I’m just suggesting to take a look at the those consistent “energy vampires” in your life. Also, even though a person maybe be a co worker you must be around or maybe a family member, that still doesn’t let you off the hook for “managing” that particular relationship. Often, having the courage to tackle the tough relationships often leads to a better relationship and/or just more energy for you.

I have experienced this first hand, when I push or force things to happen, I find it hard, difficult or a struggle as they stated in the quote above. The amazing thing was when I actually tried the other way by connecting deeper with myself and letting go of trying to control things or people around me to see it my way, I realized it was much easier and everything I needed was there…
For example, have you ever had the experience when you want something that when you let go of the outcome, you often get it? Think of a business situation or personal relationship where this has been true for you – remember that sale you really let go of and you got it or that relationship where you were true to yourself first and then it worked out for the best. This is the power of aligning with your inner understanding rather than being effected by the events or situation outside of you.
That may sound like quite a statement, that discovering the power of your breath can change your life. However, I know from personal experience “learning” how to breath “better” myself and from 10 years as a facilitator and trainer of the Transformational Breath system it can and does. I have seen major life changes occur or begin to occur, a letting go of major traumas in an hour or two, a reduction in pain in the body or the elimination of it and just more joy over and over again in myself and others.
I have gravitated toward the Transformational Breath system in my life as I feel it’s been the most comprehensive system of the various breath modalities I have tried. It’s a balance of working with the physical body, the mental and emotional part of us and the spiritual side. A new friend passed this 10 minute video onto me as one of her “gratitude” favorites around Thanksgiving day. The video has all this really cool time lapse photography of nature and also this cute little girl that talks about imagination and how for her getting out in nature helps grow her imagination. Being a “nature” guy myself, I certainly get that. I am so fortunate to live in places that have big open views and I love all the differing views that the sky and landscape brings. I even find some entertainment in clouds, for example, when I
slow down long enough. Sometimes that’s 30 seconds of cloud observing and sometimes it’s 30 minutes or more. Anyway, the video also has some nice words about gratitude and like we all know, giving a bit more gratitude for those simple things that we can take for granted in our daily lives. Draw a circle. List all the areas or aspects of your life. Makes these pieces of the pie or like spokes on a wheel of your circle. Things like, finance, health, romance, family, work, ect.
I like to call this your abundance wheel. Now rate these from 1(lowest) to 10 (highest) on how complete or abundant you feel in that particular area. Want to work in an area of your life? This is an easy way to see where you are today. Choose one area and decide to do something today NO MATTER HOW SMALL to moving forward in that area. If you want more friends, call the ones you have, look in the paper/online/message board somewhere for groups you could join that have your interest. Remember, JUST looking counts. If that’s too big of a step (usually you will know if it is, because you can’t seem to do it), break it down into smaller ones. How about just say to yourself, ” I want to have more friends” or write that down and say it everyday for a week or a month. Then, do the next step towards that goal.
My dad often said, “The definition of insanity it doing the same thing over an over again an expecting a different result”. Good advice. Adding to that advice, is take SMALL STEPS towards change. Moving from a 2 in health to a 10 is so scary and new that we often can’t seem to create change. We often are stuck in ways of being and it gets so big to move at all. This is where the small steps come in. You can not lose 30 pounds in one night. Some steps and different habits are needed. Be gentle with yourself as you try new habits and allow them to take hold slowly……. How about a goal of loosing one pound a month? Break that down, how do I do that? Eat a pint of ice cream every night before bed? How about eating one bite less each day for a month? How about not beating yourself up eating that pint of Ben & Jerry’s and actually allow yourself to enjoy it before, during and AFTER you eat it? Couch potato? How about standing up during one commercial and walking in place to begin some exercise and go from there.
Today, I’m working on creativity. SO, I’m taking out the paints (I love to paint with my fingers) that are dusty in the closet and I’m going to paint something. I do not care what I paint, what it looks like, as long as I can keep my ego in check:) I’ll focus on the feeling of the paint on my fingers, what the canvas feels like, what the colors look like. That will be my small step towards feeling more creativity in my life!

A friend gave me this book called “How many people does it take to make a difference” and it has a big number one on it. It is a fun collection of sayings and one page stories to get you going and prove that it only takes one person to make change. I found it lying around the other day and opened it to the page that had this message on it.
There’s a silent killer that stalks America. It’s called “rustout” and it’s far more deadly and scary the burnout. Sure, burnout can wear down your body, but rustout can wipe out your soul and your spirit.
“Rustout is the slow death that follows when we stop making the choices that keep life alive. It’s the feeling of numbness that comes from always taking the safe way, never accepting new challenges, continually surrendering to the day-to-day routine. Rustout means we are no longer growing, but a best, are simply maintaining. It implies that we have traded the sensation of life for the security of a paycheck….
Rustout is the opposite of burnout. Burnout is overdoing. Rustout is underbeing.

Yeah, it’s a bit ra, ra and sometimes the best we can do in any given moment is our “routines”. Though, I’m taking this as a message to mix it up a bit, I’m the one that opened the book to this page!
Sometimes, we feel change has to be so huge that it scares us into not doing anything. For me, I’m going to say yes just once when I normally would say no or just walking to get the paper in a different way. Small steps!
Here is a recipe for a fun and abundant experience…..
1. add two friends to your kitchen one with a knife and one with a camera
2. add a new meal to your life ….change is as good as a holiday they say….
3. add in fresh ingredients that will add micro nutrients to your body, release some of the stress we put on our digestive system and therefore make us feel lighter and freer
4. add fresh air, great view and sunset?? to further make the body feel great!
I think around the world most people seem to end up in and around the kitchen……. I guess, that’s where the food is! However, it also a social gathering place for family and friends. This ceviche recipe on the video is a good one to get people involved in the kitchen as there is a lot of potential chopping help.
I took this video on my way back home from lunch nearly a month ago. I’m in the heat of Cabo now, so the mountains feel pretty far away right now. However, I really love watching this as it was like a mediation as I was filming it. Watching the video and seeing the bright Aspens of that fall day and listening to the music is like a short 3 1/2 minute meditation now. A simple mental time out.
The various curves in the road, like thoughts coming and going. We can’t control the curves in the road or our thoughts, though we can learn to control how we react to them. In meditation, the practice of coming back to the present moment after a thought is a normal and some say necessary part of meditation. Of course, a peaceful drive in the country is not always possible, however, use my video for that peaceful drive if you need one. Take a couple of deep breaths and grab the wheel.
